Geographical Indications – CEVI Welcomes the Report Voted by the European Parliament
This report, largely approved by the plenary session of the Parliament, gives a strong mandate to the MEPs who will be charge of leading the discussions in the trialogue. The European independent winegrowers call on the Council to support the crucial advances defended by the Parliament’s position:
- Maintaining the role of the European Commission in the management of specifications by limiting the competence of EUIPO;
- Preserving the specific characteristics of the wine sector through the “wine package”;
- Strengthening the protection of GI products.
“The system of geographical indications is at the heart of the model promoted by independent winegrowers, and as our wines testify, we are very attached to our terroirs. I would therefore like to thank the MEPs that worked on that report for their efforts, and hope that the expectations of producers will be taken on board in the forthcoming negotiations,” said Matilde Poggi, President of CEVI.
