Cancer fight plan: CEVI commends the commission and calls for extensive collaboration

Following the release of the Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and in the context of the World Cancer Day, CEVI wishes to congratulate the European Commission for its proposals to better tackle health related issues and build a strong European health Union, and recalls on the necessity of a close collaboration with the European stakeholders involved.

In the context of the World Cancer day, CEVI thanks the European Commission for its proposal of the Europe’s Beating Cancer plan that was released yesterday, which aims at building ambitious actions to improve European Citizen’s health. Although the European Independent Winegrowers support this initiative, we are not entirely convinced by the suggested means to tackle the harmful use of alcohol related issues.

Indeed, we believe that prevention and information are the main drivers to tackle alcohol misuse. In that respect, CEVI has been glad to work together with the European wine sector and the European Commission to provide our consumers with more information related to the ingredients and nutritional values that are present in our products. We are also convinced that our products can be part of a healthy lifestyle and enjoyed in a responsible and moderate way, and can create positive externalities without increasing the risks of cancer.

We will therefore continue committing our efforts to provide clarity and informed choices to our consumers, and will carefully monitor the next steps to make sure that a coherent and proportionate approach is implemented for the application of those actions, to avoid stigmatisation and unnecessary impediments to the marketing of our products.

“There is always a story and a know-how behind each bottle of wine that we produce. Wine is a European heritage and a flagship that must continue being protected, while at the same time consumed responsibly. We remain at the European Commission’s disposal to make sure that we meet these key objectives, while at the same time preserving our products’ legitimacy”, CEVI’s President Thomas Montagne declared.
